The wrinkles and eye bags of Queen Nefertiti
She is regarded one of the most beautiful women who ever existed -- as her 3,300 year-old bust attests. But the reality of aging, and wrinkles to match, was upon this admired woman, ancient Egyptian queen Nefertiti. Matter of fact, it was something she had to deal with -- problem of wrinkles and bags under her eyes.
A new investigation on the bust that has become the international symbol of beauty revealed some fascinating thoughts on the aging Nefertiti – not something that is to be divulged by Nefertiti admirers -- at least to those who like to see the Queen remain in her most beautiful form.
The subject famous bust -- depicting a woman with a long neck, elegantly arched brows, high cheekbones, a slender nose and an enigmatic smile played about red lips, was discovered in 1912 at Tel-El-Amarna in what used to be the workshop of the sculptor Thutmose.
What now, leading experts from the Berlin's Egyptian museum are inclined to believe that Nefertiti was an aging beauty, this after they have found traces of visible wrinkles running down Nefertiti’s slender neck, and puffy bags circling her then luminous eyes.
The finding came when a different kind of lighting was used to display the bust at Berlin’s Altes Museum. With the discovery -- which was also supported by a CT scan, researchers are ecstatic, saying, “Now she is even more fascinating."
If anything, the finding merits notable consideration since "It destroys the myth of Nefertiti as the icon of youthful beauty and reveals a new, fascinating woman in her mature beauty," says Egyptologist Francesco Tiradritti.
