Number of botched plastic surgery is increasing

There is a new study saying that there has been an increase of amounts of botched cosmetic work done by British plastic surgeons lately. These botched cosmetic surgery procedures are said to be coming from countries such as South Africa. However, South African surgeons dismiss the study as just a case of sourgraping from those who responded the study.

The survey was conducted by the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons. According to the survey, half of the respondents have seen at least ‘a little more’ repair work than before while a third have seen ‘much more’ than previously.

However, South African plastic surgeons slammed the study, saying that it is nothing more than a case of sourgrapes and sweeping statements since the local industry has been enjoying a growing number of medical tourists coming from the UK, Europe, and the United States.

The death of Donda West has highlighted the risks that patients have to deal with when they go under the knife. Kanye West’s mom died a day after three major surgeries – breast reduction, tummy tuck, and liposuction, were performed on her by Dr. Jan Adams, plastic surgeon and host of Discovery Health’s Plastic Surgery: Before and After.

The study reveals that 92 percent of all surgeons surveyed said that they were concerned about the lack of aftercare provided and lower standards employed in cheap cosmetic surgery done overseas.

British Association president Dr. Douglas McGeorge said, “My experience with patients has shown that counseling is inadequate - the individuals have no idea of the standards of care in the country they are visiting and no knowledge of the abilities or experience of the surgeon. Follow-up is difficult. Complications do occur and are usually left to the British system to treat."

British Association members have stressed that cases they have seen included severe wound infections, tissue loss, and a facelift patient who had not even had her stitches removed.

On the other hand, the Association of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons of South African defends its industry, saying that the study was unsubstantiated, stressing that a high number of British people traveled to South Africa to have a cosmetic surgery makeover.

Dr. Shane Barker, Secretary of the South African association has this to say about the issue: "Surgeons in this country are renowned for their high quality work.
