Mommy makeovers on the rise
A 'mommy makeover' is a cosmetic surgery package aimed at mothers who have just recently given birth. It usually consists of three plastic surgery procedures namely a breast lift, a tummy tuck, and liposuction. The procedures are done in order to removed excess skin and as well as reduce stretch marks caused by pregnancy.
Dr. David Spoker, a plastic surgeon from California, said that the physical trauma of pregnancy, childbirth, and breast-feeding can have effects that cause women to lose their figures.
“Twenty years ago women did not think they could do anything about the after-effects of pregnancy. Now they can,” Stoker said.
A mommy makeover serves as a quick fix for stubborn post-pregnancy weight. It can also be used to control aging itself. It can be noted that mommy surgery came to public attention earlier this years after a dramatic increase in cosmetic surgery among women of child-bearing age. Last year, American doctors performed more than 325,000 mommy-makeover procedures, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
Several years ago, some surgeons noticed an increase in mothers coming in to several plastic surgeons' offices with concerns about stretched skin and post-pregnancy fat. Stretched skin and post-pregnancy fat usually do not respond to diet and exercise so women are left with no choice but to deal with them through cosmetic surgery.
