California lawmakers want to regulate plastic surgery

Lawmakers in the state of California want a new legislation for regulating plastic surgery in order to ensure patient safety when undergoing plastic surgery procedures. This move has become evident six months after Kanye West’s mom died after liposuction and breast implant surgery.

California has been urging to regulate outpatient surgical centers. Since most of the procedures are now done outside the hospital, it is best to check whether the situation is best for a patient to undergo surgery. Lawmakers see the necessity to oversee plastic surgeon qualifications, accreditation of facilities and readiness of safety measurements.

State law requires that a clinic should have resuscitation equipment and procedures ready to transfer a patient to a nearby hospital. Also, it is a requirement that surgical centers should have accreditation by an agency recognized by the government.

Senator Mark Ridley-Thomas proposed a regulation called SB 1454, which is aimed to conducting a regular inspection of cosmetic surgery clinics. The inspection may be done at least once in every three years or more frequently if necessary.

The death of Kanye West’s mom, Donda, has prompted another California lawmaker to propose another legislation that would ensure patient’s safety. Assemblywoman Wilmer Amina Carter requires a patient to go through a physical examination before going under the knife. It can be noted that Donda West did not receive a physical exam by her surgeon before surgery. A corner’s report failed to identify the exact cause of her death, though, it was suggested that she likely died from heart disease associated along with post-surgical complications.

The American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS) urges patients not to focus on the outcome of the surgery they pursue alone. They have to also consider the safety of the procedure that they are going to undertake.
