Nip and tuck before tying the knot
Indians have been one of the most visible front-runners of cosmetic surgery. Bollywood elites aren’t the only ones going under the knife to have their bodies and faces done. Even middle-class folks and perhaps even those who belong to the lower social strata have also availed of the services of a cosmetic surgeon.
Indians are so enthralled with looking good thus, it is somewhat normal for most of them to subject themselves to a surgical intervention as long as it would make them look a lot better and feel a lot better about themselves.
Now, aside from helping people land on their dream jobs, cosmetic surgery has tapped another market for its services – young boys and girls readying to tie the knot. Yes, cases of pre-wedding surgery in India are at their peak and experts can do nothing but express their observations.
Here’s what plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Lokesh Kumar has to say about this trend: “Appearance counts a lot, especially in arranged marriages.”
Financial Express presents more details:
“Girls and boys are like products in the marriage market. It is easier for a beautiful girl to find a partner who is handsome and wealthy,” says Rashmi Chaudhary, who got her nose corrected before her parents began hunting for a groom for her. “My nose was a little flat. I feel much better now,” she adds.
According to experts, this trend was hitherto restricted only to the rich, but now even would-be brides and grooms from less wealthy segments go under the knife. Reconstructive surgeries are still quite expensive, but with cheaper options of each operation emerging in recent times, they have become more accessible than ever before.
The most popular pre-matrimony procedures are rhinoplasty, scar removal, breast augmentation, liposuction, and hymenoplasty to restore virginity.
If this trend goes global, wedding planners and plastic surgeons working hand in hand in wedding preparations would no longer be an unusual sight.
